Real knowledge is to know the extent of ones ignorance.
You know what sucks? Getting kicked by a snake.
People do silly things all the time all because people essentially want one thing. You may think it's to be happy, but you'd be wrong, it's to look good. Deep down, everyone wants to look good, be admired, be cherished for who they are. You might say, they do that in order to be happy! but, you want to be happy because being happy makes you look good in the eyes of others. Being successful. Being wealthy. Having admirers. It's not selfish though, it's human nature. It's not really good or bad, it's just what we do. Everyone does it. There's nothing wrong with it, it just is what it is.
But that's not the funny part. The funny part is that we spend all this time trying to look good for people, trying to be happy and make a name for ourselves, be well known, be liked, attractive, whatever, just hoping that someone will notice... That, when we got a compliment, a real, unasked for compliment made out of the goodness of someone's heart, just because... we've got absolutely no idea to handle it at all.
D: Hey, you look nice today.
S: What do you want?
D: Nothing, good night.
S: (confuzzled look)
Bwa ha ha ha ha
Did you know on average, most north americans believe that they are more attractive and more intelligent than anybody else on Earth?

I don't know if the basic impression management the vast majority of human beings subscribe to can be placed in conjunction with with the pursuit of happiness. Certainly we all strive to "look good" but I don't think it has to do with climbing the ladder to the very top so much as just being accepted. For we are social creatures by nature.
Being driven by those impression management tactics is what keeps many folk from engaging in anti-social habits that would pretty much lead to complete anarchy. And probably death in the streets and zombies and utter chaos.
But I think seeking happiness doesn't have so much to do with the impression management, for often the happiness we pursue is in conflict with what our impression management deems appropriate. I'd say looking for happiness is more selfish than the happiness one gets from "looking good." And I mean selfish in a neutral sort of way...we've given it too much of a negative connotation, methinks.
Haha I like your last fact! What are we North American's thinking??? Europeans are WAY hotter ;)
I like what you're saying... it makes sense to me... but I don't know if I completely agree with it. I think we definitely all want to be loved and cherished by others... we humans are pack animals by nature... But I think true happiness is being able to be alone and happy with yourself... not caring about how you look or really even what you do... just being able to BE without questioning yourself or getting stuck in petty thought cycles is true happiness... (actually I almost think that's near godliness isn't it? maybe not even attainable by humans ;P)
